My name is Nicola Thorp, and I am a 50-year-old mum to 2 boys. Having worked in the hair and beauty industry for 30 years, gaining work experience in spas, salons, cruise ships, working abroad, training and education, I wanted to further my career in areas I found interesting to myself, and that would enhance my existing skill sets. So, I enrolled in the foundation degree in Media make-up, special effects and hair design which was completed with distinction.

Progression onto the BA course allows me to complete the major project with independent learning and combine all skills previously learned to problem-solve, analyse, collaborate with others, manage my time, and team, and present the results professionally and to industry standards.

The main area of interest I wish to enhance my skills in is wig making, dressing, and styling. However, pushing myself out of my comfort zone and developing an area I find to be my weakest, I have chosen to include various facial prosthetics to further develop the skills that will help enhance my career in the future.

Upon completing the BA qualification, the plan is to seek employment in the industry to gain experience. The skills learned through business management have helped me understand the leadership and management skills required and how to collaborate and communicate with others. The photography module has allowed me to understand how lighting and effects can change the appearance of a make-up look and also taught me how to compile a showreel that will enhance my written CV with one that is also visual.
